CNC Prototype Machining

CNC prototype machining is a manufacturing process that computer inputs controls machining tools including drill and lathes. CNC machining is widely used in many industries for prototypes or the end-parts. CNC machining is able to build parts with high accuracy, high quality and excellent finish.

CNC Machining process begins with a 3D CAD file. A computer translates the 3D CAD file into instructions which are known as G-code to the machine’s cutting tools. When the instructions are sent to the machines, there is few manual supervision is needed as machine will cut and performs the machining automatically which save time and cost significantly compared to traditional machining that requires skill machinist to cut the workpiece manually.

CNC machining can be an excellent choice to build prototypes, but depends on the nature of the prototype. For example, purpose of the prototypes, materials will be used. There are many reasons to use CNC machining to build a prototype which include production speed, part quality, material options and similarity to the end parts.

As CNC machining is a digital process, it creates parts from a computer file. A machined prototype matches the digital 3D design closely. And the same digital design can be used to build the end parts with the same dimensions. Repeatability is very high. 3D design allows precision. If manufacturers want to modify a machined prototype, they can easily return to the CAD software to make related adjustments for the next round prototypes. Manufactures can compared the different versions side by side, and the simulation software can be used to see how the part will perform in the real world.

CNC Prototype Machining offers high quality and consistency. CNC machines could follow the instructions to within a fraction of millimeter. A CNC machine can run the same job a second time with minimal deviation from the previous. This is useful to develop new iterations of prototype. CNC machining offers a wide range of compatible materials, including extremely strong and durable metals. For example, aluminum, steel, stainless steel, magnesium, titanium, zinc, brass, bronze, ABS, PC, PP, PS, POM, PMMA, LDPE, HDPE etc.

CNC machining is widely used because of its versatility, accuracy, consistency and a wide range of available material. If you need want to learn more about CNC machining, contact TEAM Rapid at [email protected] today.
